SGC Overview

SGC Purpose Statement

The purpose of the School Governance Council is to provide parents, school staff, and community members with a leadership role in the management of the school. The School Governance Council is a governing body that is representative of the community and the school but operates under the control and management of the Board of Education. The Council is responsible for making decisions regarding the strategic direction of the school including:

  • Approve the school strategic plan and updates
  • Approve the annual budget and annual resource allocations
  • Manage the Request for Flexibility process
  • Participate in hiring the principal (in the case of a vacancy)
  • Provide annual feedback on principal performance.

Fulton County Schools has been collaborating with the Fulton County Board of Education to revise the processes for school-based programs over the past year and a half. During the Board Work Session on October 8, 2024, Operating Guideline IJ: Programs, Pilots, Research, and Evaluation was presented. This guideline updates several processes and expectations for schools, including new definitions and procedures for magnet programs. We encourage all council members to review the operating guideline thoroughly, as the details directly impact our schools: Operating Guideline IJ.

Sandtown Middle School is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate.  Per the new guidelines, we invite all school stakeholders to view the VAF document linked above.
